Can You Replace A Section Of Chain Link Fence?

Title

There can be many reasons why a section of chain link fence would need to be replaced or repaired. Commonly, tree limbs or branches may fall and damage a section of the fence. Instead of replacing the whole chain link fence, it makes much more sense to replace only the damaged section. Before assessing the damage, be sure to clear the area of any debris and remove any tree limbs or whatever had caused the damage.

Figure Out What Needs Replaced

Once everything has been cleared, it is time to figure out what is broken and needs replaced. If a limb has fallen onto the fence, then perhaps the top rail would need to be replaced, or maybe the chain link mesh got a hole in it, so that may need to be replaced. Whichever pieces need to be replaced, it's easiest to replace the section between the two posts. This will make stretching the mesh and replacing a top rail much easier.

Quick Examples

Check out our chain link fence tools to help with replacing or repairing the chain link fence. An example of a quick fence section replacement would be if the top rail was bent and needed to be replaced. All you would need to do is get a section of tubing for your top rail and replace the section that is broken or bent. Take the mesh off the top rail using pliers to untwist the fence ties or hog rings, then replace the top rail and re-attach the mesh to the tubing.

Another quick example might be that the mesh needs to be replaced. The only thing needed would be to take the existing mesh off and replace it as long as there is no damage to the tension bars or tension wire. To remove a section of chain link fence mesh, untwist a wire from the top and bottom and unravel that to disconnect the mesh. You may need to take the tension bar out temporarily. To connect the new chain link fabric, take a wire out of one end and then splice together the two ends to connect them. You might need to attach the mesh to any bands if they were previously attached. Once this is done, re-tension the fabric at the end of the chain link fence using a stretcher bar and stretcher. Once the mesh is stretched, attach the section to the top rail and tension rail using fence ties.
